The project may or may not have a bearing on the scents released by the brand from 2021 onwards. * In November 2020, I was commissioned to complete a writing project by the brand Amouage. This has no bearing on the content of the reviews. Some reviews are based on samples provided by brands others are based on samples obtained by the author. The content of posts is never ‘sponsored’ by any external agencies. The site is not affiliated in any way to any brands*, wholesalers, retailers or organisations involved with the fragrance industry.Īll reviews are entirely independent. features reviews of perfumes, interviews with fragrance industry figures and general articles related to the world of scent. And that is precisely what’s missing in Promise. No matter how brash and attention-grabbing Arabian leathers may be, they always know that, at their core, they must retain a sense of unhurried sophistication. In short, Promise misses the most crucial element of this style of perfumery: elegance. And the apple note isn’t a gentle fizz of tart fruitiness but a restrictive cocoon made of sour peel. The cypriol isn’t a subtle charcoal glow, but a raging, choking conflagration. The labdanum feels not like a tendril of smoke on a desert breeze, but an industrial-sized vat of balsamic blackness. Everything about it is cranked up to ludicrous proportions. ![]() In the same way that The Night was an attempt to make the final, indisputable statement on the rose + oud genre (an attempt which is damn near 100% successful) Promise was probably envisaged as the last word on the ‘gigantic, Arabian leather-rose’ category. ![]() The perfumers' promise to produce their very best has also proved to be true.įrédéric Malle and Dominique Ropion crystalize this promise and the artistic standard it demands with two precious varieties of rose: Rose essence from Bulgaria and rose absolute from Turkey are lifted by apple, pink pepper and clove, and bound to a sensuous base of patchouli, cypriol and labdanum an accord as unbreakable, and invisible, as a vow.I think I can see what Promise is supposed to be. Frédéric's promise to perfumers, to guide them through their creative process and help them reach the pinnacle of their ability and talent,is a promise that he has kept to this day. This principle lies at the heart of Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle. He identifies with this principle and all binding principles of the same kind, believing that keeping one's word, holding one self accountable to someone else, unites people around the world. On his travels through out the Middle East, Frédéric Malle saw that a promise made between two people is accompanied by the strictest honor code. Promise celebrates one of the strongest bonds in human relationships: keeping one's word. The perfumes' authors are Dominique Ropion and Carlos Benaïm. Times of day in Arabic also hold both religious and symbolic meanings, ones that have informed many of the collection's names. ![]() Promise was inspired by the sacred value that perfume holds in the Middle East that began when the prophet Mohammed himself wore perfume, and saw perfuming oneself as integral to the cleaning ritual before prayer.
